New look for Google Maps

Last week Google has introduced the new long-awaited update to Google Maps. The update has rolled out and is available now for everybody to try out the new look and new features.

For now, Google still gives its users a choice to use the new look or not. If you have switched to the new look, but want to go back to classic, click on the question mark in the bottom right of the screen and choose “Return to classic Google Maps”. However, depending on your system properties, you might not be able to experience all the features of the new Google Maps. In case you are using Internet Explorer 10 or 11, Safari 6+ browsers or operating systems Windows XP, Vista or MacOSX lower than 10.8.3, you will be able to use only Lite version. Full features of Google Maps are available to lucky users of Windows 7 or 8, MacOSX 10.8.3+ or Chrome OS and the latest versions of browsers Firefox and Chrome. Requirements for Linux users are yet unclear.

If you are not yet familiar with the update, here is what's new:

  • The white bar on the left, where usually local listings were displayed, is gone. Now to choose a business you have to click either on one of the red circles on the map, which will open more details, either click on “See full list”, which will bring you to another window with the list of the businesses in the area and a smaller map. The map now offers more details about each business: ability to see the business reviews right on the map, possibility to see immediately the street view of the location. Local Fame on Google Maps
  • Street View, Photos and satellite images are easy to access now. Just click on the map and Google will list images of the clicked location. The full mode also includes ability to view the location in 3D.
  • Directions mode will show you how to get from one location to another. Different options – car, public transport, walk, bicycle, flight – will bring out possible routes and approximate time to reach your destination. The route is adjustable - in case you want to visit several destinations, Google Maps will show an optimum route to visit them all.
  • In case you are logged into your Google account, Maps can show you the information related to a flight, hotel or restaurant reservation. The information is pulled from your mail in Gmail account, if you have such.
  • In general, Google Maps is offering even better experience to the users and increases importance for business owners to create and enhance listings on Google. And it is even more important to use local seo services.
