How Google Maps Results Can Crush a Successful Business

Don't let your rivals hurt your business onlineTake the case of the Serbian Crown Restaurant. Early in the year of 2012 the restaurant went into decline, specifically it suffered around 75% decline in weekend business. The owner, Rene Bertagna couldn't understand why until a regular customer mentioned that Google Places listed the restaurant as closed at weekends.Like most restaurants the Serbian Crown had been busiest at weekends and of course weekend trade is the place where most new repeat customers should be generated. These are the very people who're most likely to use the internet to search for somewhere new and interesting to eat. Initially the restaurant was forced to lay off staff but even that wasn't enough. Mr Bertagna hired an internet consultant to take control of the page and correct the listing but it was too late to save the business. After 40 years of successful trading the Serbian Crown closed in April 2013.Mr Bertagna says that until he became aware of the incorrect listing he never used the internet and certainly never set up a Google Places page. He's now has brought a suit against Google, claiming that they allowed the listing to be "sabotaged" and didn't act swiftly or strongly enough to undo the damage. Google's lawyers have moved to dismiss the lawsuit calling it a 'meritless claim'.Bottle and a glass'Meritless?' Well, that's for the courts to decide of course. The whole question of to what extent Google is responsible for the accuracy or the effects of information published is a subject that's still up in the air. What's clear is that the situation could have been so easily avoided. Any business can and should claim and manage their Google Places listing. The internet is such a powerful tool and has such fantastic potential to be the most cost-effective form of advertising, certainly of the twenty-first century and arguably ever. It's not necessary to be an internet genius though there's something of a learning curve to start with and the better your understanding the more effective your marketing campaign will be.
